Spanish sides struggle in European Club Competition

Diego Capel vs Athletic Bilbao

There are 5 teams from Spain currently in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona are in the UCL, while Atletico Madrid, Valencia CF and Athletic Bilbao duplicate Portugal's feat last year of putting three teams in the Europa League semifinals. Just one of those teams managed to win their respective matches, and that is guaranteed since one of the matchups is an all-Spanish encounter.

Bayern Munich 2 - Real Madrid 1: Mario Gomez denies the current La Liga leaders the satisfaction of a draw in Munich, scoring a goal in the 90' off a low cross from Philipp Lahm. The German side is looking at becoming the first team to host a Champions League final in its home stadium. French international Franck Ribery opened scoring in the 17', with Mesut Ozil tying it in the 53', securing a key away goal. Even in defeat, Jose Mourinho remains undaunted, expressing that they can still achieve a result that will send them back to Munich for the final. His German counterpart Jupp Heynckes was satisfied with the result, pleased with the passion, lust and hunger for success that his team showed.

Chelsea 1 - Barcelona 0: The Blues only had one shot on goal the entire game, and Didier Drogba made it count during the first half injury time. The reigning champions dominated possession and shot attempts, but the lone English side remaining in European play were up to the task, fending off attempts and escaped with the victory at Stamford Bridge.

Atletico Madrid 4 - Valencia 2: Falcao scores twice for the 2010 Europa League winners, which went on the aggressive for goal-scoring opportunities as per the direction of their manager Diego Simeone., but the current 3rd placers of La Liga scored on injury time of both halves, to give themselves hope of advancing. This is quite a contrast to their scoreless face off in league action last February.

Sporting CP 2 - Athletic Bilbao 1: Spaniard Diego Capel denies the Basques the satisfaction of winning at Lisbon in the 80'. Athletic however, has an away goal thanks to Aurtenetxe in the 54'.

The 2nd legs of all these matches will take place (all in Spanish venues) next week, with the Europa League matches on the 26th and the Champions League matches on the 24th (Camp Nou) and 25th (Santiago Bernabeu).
