Fresh from defending its European title, Spain is looking to add an Olympic gold medal to its growing collection of trophies.
On Tuesday, the Royal Spanish Football Federation released a 23-man selection of players from which the coaching staff, led by Luis Milla, will whittle down to 18. To determine who will comprise the final selection, a couple of friendlies have been scheduled, against Senegal on July 11 and against Mexico on July 18. According to Milla, those two countries will provide the necessary preparation for their opponents in the group stage in Honduras, Japan and Morocco.
The roster is heavy on players who participated in the Under-21 team that secured the championship in the Euros, as well as the Under-20 team the participated in the Under-20 World Cup last year. They are bolstered by three players that were in the senior side that participated in the Euros in Jordi Alba, Juan Mata and Javi Martinez. They will get some rest first before joining the team in time for the Mexico friendly.
