The contenders for the semifinals of the UEFA Euro 2012 is set after Italy defeated England 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw Sunday night in Kyiv.
The Azurri had to endure 120 minutes in order to beat England on penalties after it ended in a 0-0 draw for both sides. A shot straight to the crossbar for Ashley Young and a Gianluigi Buffon save on Ashley Cole's spot kick sealed the deal for the Italians with Alessandro Diamanti scoring the winning penalty. Andrea Pirlo also made his name in the shootout after chipping in the ball past Joe Hart similar to Antonin Panenka's strike against West Germany in the 1976 Final.
Portugal defeated Czech Republic 1-0 in the first quarterfinal thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's header in the 79th minute.
Germany dominated against 2004 champions Greece in a 4-2 win. Skipper Philipp Lahm scored in the 39th minute before Georgios Samaras equalized in the 55th minute. Midfielder Sami Khedira scored a monstrous volley in the 61st minute to retake the lead. Goals from Miroslav Klose (68th minute) and Marco Reus (74th minute) sealed the deal for the Germans, with Dimitris Salpigidis adding a second consolation for Greece.
Defending champions Spain had to rely on Xabi Alonso to score twice in their win against France. It was Alonso's 100th apperance for Spain, making him the fifth Spaniard to reach the feat after Andoni Zubizarreta, Raul, Iker Casillas and Xavi already reaching 100 caps for Spain.
The semfinal clash between Portugal and Spain will be on Tuesday June 27 (June 28 in Manila) in Donetsk while Germany meets Italy the next day in Warsaw.
